Pakistan’s Nuclear Weapons: Proliferation and Security Issues

This June 2009 report by the Congressional Research Service examines the scope and security of Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal, along with the country’s ongoing pursuit of expanded production facilities and delivery vehicles. Citing observers who fear that volatility in Pakistan may lead to a radical takeover of the government or proliferation by radical sympathizers within Pakistan’s nuclear complex, the report’s summary states: “While U.S. and Pakistani officials express confidence in controls over Pakistan’s nuclear weapons, continued instability in the country could impact these safeguards.”
