Beginning with the bilateral negotiations of the early-1990s between Israel and the Palestinians, Jordan, Syria, and Lebanon, this June 2009 report by the Congressional Research Service summarizes the recent history of the region's peace process with an examination of various milestones and conflicts, along with the U.S. role in the process. The report's summary notes that while the U.S. Congress has endorsed Jerusalem as the undivided capital of Israel, U.S. administrations “have consistently maintained that the fate of the city is the subject of final status negotiations.”
