Mark Gilbert is a resident professor of international history at Johns Hopkins University-SAIS Europe, based in Bologna. Gilbert was previously associate professor in contemporary history and international studies at the University of Trento, lecturer in European studies at the University of Bath and assistant professor of political science at Dickinson College. Gilbert is a fellow of the Royal Historical Society and, since 2015, has been associate editor of the Journal of Modern Italian Studies. He is the author of several books, including “Cold War Europe: The Politics of a Contested Continent,” “European Integration: A Concise History,” “Surpassing Realism: The Politics of European Integration Since 1945” and “The Italian Revolution: The End of Politics, Italian Style?” His writing on Italian and European politics has appeared in Foreign Affairs, The National Interest, World Policy Journal and other publications.
