Robert D. Crews is associate professor of history and director of the Abbasi Program in Islamic Studies at Stanford University. His publications include “For Prophet and Tsar: Islam and Empire in Russia and Central Asia” and, most recently, “Afghan Modern: The History of a Global Nation.”
